Ansam Nou Pli For
CONTEMPLATIONS — a solidarity initiative born in response to the Wakashio ecological disaster in Mauritius.
CONTEMPLATIONS is an initiative born in response to the Wakashio ecological disaster in Mauritius. This oil spill represents the most severe ecological crisis the island has experienced in centuries.
Combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, this tragedy constituted a tipping point, a systemic shock, for the island’s economy and ecology.
The shipwreck acted as a catalyst for environmental and economic deterioration, inscribing the duality of crises into the collective mental landscape. It brought to light the palpable anxieties of a community already at breaking point.
Project Objective
The objective is to catalyze a local and international solidarity response through art and literature. Orchestrated by the NGOs “Ansam nu pli for” and Mélanzé, this initiative gave rise to a poetry competition and a collaborative anthology combining visual art and poetry.
The Book
The book expresses the anxieties and hopes of a community struck by both the health crisis and the ecological catastrophe. Proceeds from sales are donated to local fishermen, severely impacted by the pollution.
The anthology offers a plurality of voices in three languages: French, English and Creole, reflecting the reality of this island nation. In addition to voluntary contributions from participants, internationally acclaimed writers such as Ananda Devi and Elieen Lokha joined the adventure as jury members and contributors.
